The National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) in Sri Lanka aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture by converting waste from banana cultivation into valuable resources. The project intends to lower methane and carbon dioxide emissions from the decomposition and burning of waste, while producing organic fertilizer and biodegradable banana fibre products. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the project aims to introduce extracted fibres into the textile supply chain. Leftover pulp will be used to create packaging materials, promoting sustainable practices. The initiative creates economic opportunities for local communities, particularly for unemployed women and individuals with special needs. Workshops and training sessions are organised to train the local community on fibre extraction, product development, and market access. Capacity-building measures will empower farmers and community members, and the establishment of a self-sustaining community organisation ensures long-term project viability and accountability. Overall, the project aims to promote eco-friendly products and sustainable agricultural practices, contributing to economic development in Sri Lanka.

For NCPC, this marks the second project financed by IKI Small Grants, following the successful completion of a previous project in 2024.

Capacity development

In addition to providing funding, IKI Small Grants aims to strengthen its partners and tapping potentials. The following capacity development measures are planned to support NCPC Sri Lanka:

Level II infrared thermography certification course
Energy auditor training
Trainings on public relations, organisational development and on fundraising
Organisational knowledge management system training

About the organisation

The National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC), founded in 2002 in Sri Lanka, aims to design and deliver demand-driven, locally adaptable solutions for industrial, business, governmental and other organisations to become environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and economically productive. In this process, they promote Resource Efficient & Cleaner Production (RECP) in various companies and business sectors in the country. Furthermore, they support partners in achieving environmental sustainability and improving knowledge via capacity building in public and private sectors.
