The project focuses on the establishment of a comprehensive waste management system for Dudhauli, in Nepal. The approach includes the set-up of a recycling centre, with the aim of reducing waste that is going to landfill by 50 per cent. Additionally, all medical waste from medical facilities in the area is to be treated and disposed of safely. Farmers will be supported in replacing chemical fertilisers with compost that they obtain from the recycling centre or produce themselves. Residents will be sensitised and trained to separate waste correctly. In order to cover the operational costs of waste management, plastic and other recyclable waste is to be sold as a raw material. Local craftspeople will also be trained in the creation of upcycled products. The project results are to be transferred to other municipalities via demonstration visits and other dissemination strategies.

Capacity development

In addition to providing of funding, IKI Small Grants supports Health Environment and Climate Action Foundation in their organisational capacity through:

Learn best practices and business models in (organic) waste management.

Gender mainstreaming training: roles in waste, gender-sensitive planning/implementation, workplace policies, and impact monitoring/reporting.

M&E training to build systems and skills for tracking progress, measuring impact, and ensuring accountability.

Financial management training for internationally funded projects: budgeting, transparent accounting and donor compliance.

Fundraising and communications training: diversify funding, donor relations, partnership strategies, reporting, case studies, social media.

About the organisation

HECAF designs and implements innovative Zero Waste management systems in healthcare facilities, communities and municipalities. In doing so, it encourages safe non-burn technology, promotes a clean, green and climate–resilient healthcare system and provides education about the 3Rs of waste management (reduce, reuse, and recycle) in Nepal.
