Meru District in Arusha Region is located in Northern Tanzania. Rainfed and irrigated agriculture is the main economic activity, employing 80 per cent of the population and accounting for more than 50 per cent of the district’s gross domestic product. Unreliable rainfall and prolonged dry seasons are affecting the productive potential of small holder farmers and impeding their capability to exploit available market opportunities. This IKI Small Grants project enhances resilience of 2,500 small-scale farmers to effects of climate change, by introducing climate-smart agricultural practices and improved water management practices. It focuses on women and youths. Collaboration with local government authorities and Sustainable Water Management (SUWAMA) partners in the district advances sustainability of project interventions.

Capacity development

IKI Small Grants supports Agro-Tanzania Organization in their organisational capacity development through:

Training on monitoring and evaluation
Training on proposal writing skills, organisational strategy development, and conflict management
Training on ICT
Support on developing gender inclusive climate-smart projects

About the organisation

Agro-Tanzania Organization (ATO) is a Non-Governmental Organisation legally registered in 2019. ATO contributes to improve productivity and increase income of small holder farmers using improved agricultural technologies and better local practices for sustainable use of natural resources. The organisation influences sustainable development in the agricultural sector environments. It promotes agribusiness through targeted interventions. It focuses on improving local food security, promoting smallholders’ economic prosperity, improved nutrition, and advocacy to matters of public policy.
