Enhancing Biodiversity and Restoring Bird Populations in Driefontein’s Wetlands
Driefontein Grassland area is a vital central watershed and Ramsar Site in a little to the east of the geographical centre of Zimbabwe. This area sustains thousands of downstream communities through its network of wetlands and patches of extensively dry miombo woodlands. It is a key biodiversity area, hosting threatened bird species such as the Grey Crowned Crane, Wattled Crane, and Secretarybird. However, the area faces conservation challenges from population pressure, erratic rainfall driving encroachment of agricultural activities in core wetlands, and overgrazing that damages breeding sites. This IKI Small Grants project aims to restore and secure key wetland sites across Widgeon, Chinyaure, and Shashe Villages and promote sustainable agriculture and grazing practices among 60 households, ensuring improved biodiversity and ecosystem resilience into the future.
